WHAT'S UP: Older veterans could use Medicare benefits to receive health care from veterans hospitals under legislation sponsored by Rep. Bob Filner of California, ranking Democrat on the House Veterans' Affairs Committee. His bill, HR 814, would repeal a provision of current law prohibiting Medicare from reimbursing the Veterans' Affairs Department, a policy Filner said would make VA care more attractive to veterans.
WHAT'S NEXT: The Medicare Reimbursement Act, as the bill is called, would require the VA to set up a system to bill Medicare for services given to veterans who are enrolled in Medicare Part A or B. This would allow veterans who would rather be treated by the VA the chance to use their Medicare benefits for this purpose.
